2013 Sage Canyon Red Wine, California LIMITED AVAILABILITY Case $259.88
Made from 45% Carignane (135 year old, own‐rooted vines in Oakley), 25% Grenache (Clements Hills AVA), 15% Mourvedre (125 year old, own‐rooted vines in Oakley), 15% Syrah (Sangiacomo Hillside Vineyard on Old Lakeville Road). It was an immediate success and we’ve quickly sold out of every vintage since our initial offering in 2010. The idea began to take shape about six years ago, when (winemaker) Tadeo and I first visited the Mourvedre vineyard planted by Greg Adams at the old Rosso vineyard in central Sonoma highlands. The new owner Paul Otellini had replanted a small block to non‐clonal selections of Mourvedre, and the vineyard was breathtaking. Tadeo and I had talked about Rhone variety blends ever since Daniel Brunier breached the subject with us during a trip to Vieux Telegraph in 2005. Finding the right grapes was always the concern. About the same time, Markus Bokisch introduced us to his Grenache vineyard in the Sierra Foothills appellation of Clements Hills – a beautiful parcel of non‐clonal Grenache planted on an outcropping of quartz. On the way home we stopped by to see Frank Evangelho at his old‐vine vineyard in Oakley. With the addition of Syrah from the Sangiacomo Family Old Lakeville Road vineyard, we had all the elements in place for our version of a Rhone blend. We named it Sage Canyon Red, after the location of our winery. “Lavender, mint, and anise aromas mix with berry fruits to make a ripe, medium weight food wine.”
